June was set for a positive start on Wall Street. Dow futures led the way Tuesday, with an over 250-point gain, more than 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 broke two-week losing streaks with weekly gains around 1%. The Nasdaq jumped 2% last week for its first two-week winning streak since mid-April. The Nasdaq, however, bucked May's uptrend, dropping 1.5% and ending a six-month winning streak. Investors already have Friday's May employment report in their sights, as well as the June 15-16 meeting of Federal Reserve policymakers.

Bitcoin crashed last month, plunging more tan 30% on May 19 to around $30,000. However, at Tuesday's levels, it was still up about 24% in 2021 and 275% higher in the past 12 months.

It's the latest in a series of capital raises for the struggling theater chain. 4. Elon Musk reveals reason for Tesla vehicle price hikes

Price hikes on Tesla vehicles are due to "major supply chain pressure" across the auto industry, CEO Elon Musk said in response to a tweet. "Raw materials especially," Musk added.

In May, Tesla increased its Model 3 and Model Y prices, the automaker's fifth incremental price increase for its vehicles in just a few months, according to EV news site Electrek.

Rosa Parks market set to return with new location and Juneteenth celebration - Q City Metro - Qcity metro

unitedstatepolitics.blogspot.com

The Rosa Parks Farmers Market will kick off its sixth season with a Juneteenth celebration at a new location in the Historic West End. The market will open Tuesday, June 15, at the West Complex (1600 W. Trade St.).

The celebration will feature African drumming, music, entertainment and food samples courtesy of the Mecklenburg County Health Department, Vivian Stuart, the market’s manager, told QCity Metro.

Along with fruits, vegetables and the typical fare, the market will provide health education, guest lectures and healthy cooking demonstrations.

Stuart said being stationed at West Complex for the season, along with its other attractions, will help the market expand its audience and ultimate mission — to transform lives through access and education.

“We have to do whatever we can to help build up the people in the community and to see them in a place of self determination,” she said. “That includes overcoming the processed foods causing a great deal of health issues like diabetes and cancer.”

Stuart said the market will have dozens of vendors for the 15-week season, including its anchor vendor and partner The Males Place, which offers fruits and vegetables grown locally by 12- to 18-year-olds.

The market was launched in 2016 to address a shortage of healthy food options in historically Black neighborhoods in west Charlotte. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, so-called “food deserts” contribute to poor diets, which often lead to obesity, Type-2 diabetes and heart disease.

In Charlotte, the two areas most affected by food insecurity lie within the neighboring zip codes 28208 and 28216, both in the Historic West End.

Stuart said the Market’s mission is to combat health disparities by teaching and enabling food sovereignty, which encourages people to plant home and neighborhood gardens.

“I know that a lot of the problems our people are facing with sickness is due to the food they eat,” she said.

The Rosa Parks market has had several homes, including the Mecklenburg County Health Department on Beatties Ford Road, a strip mall at 2020 Beatties Ford Road and Reeder Memorial Baptist Church.

Now at the West Complex, the market joins other anchor vendors, such as HotBox Next Level Kitchen, as a mainstay for the summer season. The complex, which is expected to run through October, features outdoor seating, games, performances, music and food.

The property, which formerly housed an A&P grocery store, was recently given to Johnson C. Smith University by the Duke Endowment. JCSU has not announced its plans for the property.

Stuart said she hopes someone will donate arable land on the Beatties Ford corridor so that the market can grow.

“We would love a permanent place for the Rosa Parks Farmers Market,” she said. “It would have a tremendous impact on the community.”

If you go:

Dates: every Tuesday between June 15 and Sept. 28
Times: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Address: 1600 W. Trade St.

As Coronavirus Toll Grows, Brazil’s Political Divisions Spill Onto the Streets - The New York Times

unitedstatepolitics.blogspot.com

Opponents of President Jair Bolsonaro have mounted the largest protests since the beginning of the pandemic, suggesting new volatility before next year’s elections.

SÃO PAULO, Brazil — For weeks, President Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters have made their presence felt with the roar of motorcycles during boisterous rallies meant to show steadfast fealty to an increasingly unpopular leader.

Until recently, the president’s opponents had refrained from convening street protests, opting instead to show their exasperation by banging pots and pans from windows and trading memes online.

But over the weekend, thousands of Brazilians critical of Mr. Bolsonaro took to the streets in the largest public mobilization against the president since the beginning of the pandemic.

Their show of force in cities across the country followed a series of damning revelations in congressional hearings examining the government’s catastrophic response to the coronavirus, which has killed more than 461,000 Brazilians.

Mariana Filgueiras, a professor at the school of communication at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, said she decided to participate in anti-government protests to help put a face on the rising opposition. A recent public opinion poll, by Datafolha, found that Mr. Bolsonaro’s support slipped to 24 percent in May from 30 percent in March.

“We need to show that for every thousand people on motorcycles who are in favor of the government, there are thousands of people walking peacefully in the streets against it,” Ms. Filgueiras said. “The government is more dangerous than the virus.”

The recent street demonstrations, which have been largely orderly, are a far cry from the huge protests that shook Brazil in 2013 and 2015, fueling the successful effort to impeach President Dilma Rousseff in 2016.

But political analysts said they could signal a new phase of political instability as a deeply polarized electorate starts gearing up for next year’s presidential election.

“These demonstrations, given the number of people and their turnout throughout the nation, have put impeachment back on the horizon,” said Pablo Ortellado, a public policy professor at the University of São Paulo. “It doesn’t mean an impeachment will happen, but the possibility has gained traction.”

Mr. Ortellado said the president’s hard-core supporters have been more visible on the streets than his detractors because, like Mr. Bolsonaro, many have dismissed the threat of the virus. That means they attend crowded gatherings of people who do not wear masks.

“The left was advocating social distancing and mask wearing while the right was advocating going back to work and criticizing the policies of distancing,” he said.

Anger over Mr. Bolsonaro’s handling of the pandemic has grown in recent days as witnesses outlined a long series of missteps in testimony before a legislative committee. Former health ministers spoke about the president’s befuddling belief that an anti-malaria drug was effective to treat Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, even after scientists concluded definitively that it was not.

An executive at Pfizer testified that the American pharmaceutical company offered Brazil millions of doses of its Covid-19 vaccine last year, but received no response from the government for months.

Mr. Bolsonaro has shrugged off the revelations and shown no contrition. On Monday, his government announced that Brazil would host the Copa America soccer tournament later this year, after Argentina decided it would be irresponsible to do so on its soil while the virus continues to spread.

At recent rallies supporting the president, Mr. Bolsonaro has been lionized as a “myth.” A recent banner that greeted motorcycle enthusiasts in Rio de Janeiro proclaimed: “Myth, you are not alone.”

Paulo Cid Engineer, 55, who participated in one of those recent motorcycle rallies, said he regarded Mr. Bolsonaro as a fundamentally honest leader who has been unfairly attacked by scientific institutions and by the news media.

“I confess that my indignation turned into emotion,” he said, recalling how he felt at a pro-government rally earlier this month in Rio de Janeiro. “I will be able to tell my children and grandchildren that I took my part in a movement seeking a better country.”

The government has also been shaken by scandals unrelated to the pandemic.

The Estadão newspaper revealed in early May that Mr. Bolsonaro’s administration had steered hundreds of millions of dollars to questionable initiatives and purchases that strengthened the hand of key allied lawmakers. One case involved the government’s purchase of tractors at a 259 percent markup.

Days after the Estadão report, federal police served search warrants at the ministry of the environment as part of an investigation into a suspected scheme to authorize illegal exports of timber from the Amazon.

Amid the drumbeat of bad news, Mr. Bolsonaro has kept a busy travel schedule, focusing on electorally important states in northeast Brazil, where he has highlighted investments in infrastructure and basic services.

The president’s main political rival, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has refrained from endorsing street protests. But Mr. da Silva, who recently won court battles in a corruption case, which restored his right to run for elected office, is clearly relishing the prospect of a grass roots face-off against a beleaguered incumbent. Recent public opinion polls show Mr. da Silva narrowly edging Mr. Bolsonaro in next year’s presidential contest.

“When Bolsonaro goes to the streets, he needs thousands of police officers to protect him,” Mr. da Silva wrote on Twitter on Saturday. “Does he think I’m afraid of him? I was born on the streets and spent my whole political life on the streets.”

Ernesto Londoño reported from São Paulo, Brazil, and Flávia Milhorance from Rio de Janeiro.

Stock Market Today: Dow, S&P Live Updates for Jun. 1, 2021 - Bloomberg

unitedstatepolitics.blogspot.com

Stocks and equity futures were steady and commodities including oil rose Tuesday, supported by optimism about the economic recovery from the pandemic. Treasury yields ticked higher.

MSCI Inc.’s gauge of Asia-Pacific equities climbed to the highest level in over a month, bolstered by gains in South Korea and Hong Kong. Sentiment was helped by reports signaling manufacturing grew in Asia in May despite Covid-19 flareups. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were little changed following a U.S. holiday, while European contracts advanced.

The dollar edged lower and the offshore yuan was stable following China’s latest effort to restrain the currency. The pound rallied to a three-year high on vaccine-led reopening optimism for the U.K. Australia’s dollar trimmed gains after the central bank left key policy settings unchanged.

Oil jumped after the OPEC+ alliance forecast a tightening market. Commodities from iron ore to copper also pushed higher, a reminder of the rising costs that are stoking concerns about faster inflation and possible reductions in stimulus.

A gauge of emerging-market stocks has climbed to a three-month high

Global stocks are starting the new month near record highs, underpinned by the recovery from the health crisis and ample liquidity. Still, concerns linger that rising price pressures could prompt central banks to withdraw support earlier than anticipated. Traders are awaiting key American jobs data later in the week to help assess the path of the rebound.

“The inflation outlook is a risk because it is so unknown at the moment, and it will take a number of months to really get a true idea of whether we will see that inflation be persistently higher or not,” Kerry Craig, JPMorgan Asset Management global market strategist, said on Bloomberg TV.

Here are key events to watch this week:

  • OPEC+ meets to review oil production levels Tuesday
  • Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker, Chicago Fed President Charles Evans, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic and Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan speak Wednesday
  • U.S. employment report for May on Friday

These are some of the main moves in markets:

Stocks

  • S&P 500 futures were steady as of 7 a.m. in London. The gauge was little changed Friday.
  • Nasdaq 100 futures were flat. The index rose 0.2% Friday.
  • Japan’s Topix index added 0.2%
  • Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index dropped 0.1%
  • South Korea’s Kospi index rose 0.5%
  • Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.6%
  • China’s Shanghai Composite Index was little changed
  • Euro Stoxx 50 futures edged up 0.3%

Currencies

  • The yen traded at 109.48 per dollar, up 0.1%
  • The offshore yuan was at 6.3720 per dollar
  • The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index fell 0.1%
  • The euro was at $1.2226

Bonds

  • The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose about two basis points to 1.62%
  • Australia’s 10-year bond yield was at 1.71%

Commodities

  • West Texas Intermediate crude rose 2.1% to $67.68 a barrel
  • Gold was at $1,912.70 an ounce, up 0.3%

Still in the throes of Covid, India emerges as one of Asia's top stock markets in May - CNBC

India stocks were among Asia-Pacific's top-performing markets in May, even as the country continues to grapple with tens of thousands of new cases every day.

For the month, the Nifty 50 rose 6.5% while the BSE Sensex was up 6.47%.

"The old phrase 'go away and sell in May' wasn't true — at least for this month," said Tuan Huynh, who is chief investment officer for Europe and Asia-Pacific at Deutsche Bank International Private Bank. "In the Indian case, I think it is relatively surprising."

"The markets seem to like to differentiate between economic and obviously corporate earnings development versus then the rise of the new cases," he told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" on Tuesday.

India has registered more than 28 million infections so far and is the second worst-hit country in the world in terms of caseload, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Daily cases have eased from the record high of over 400,000 at the start of May — but continue to hover above 100,000. That's still quite high compared to other countries in the world.

U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs is "overweight" on India, and expects stocks there to outperform.

"Markets tend to, as they say, live in the future and not in the present," Timothy Moe, co-head of Asia macro research and chief Asia-Pacific equity strategist at Goldman Sachs, told CNBC last week.

He pointed out that there's a "very concerning humanitarian crisis" in terms of a Covid surge in India. However, "the market is basically looking through that and expecting the rate of infections to come down, which indeed has taken place."

    Asia's best and worst performers

Meanwhile, Vietnam was Asia-Pacific's best-performing market in May — the VN Index jumping 7.15% for the month.

The gains came despite Vietnam's Covid situation taking a turn for the worse in recent weeks. State-run media reported that social distancing measures were imposed in the country's business hub Ho Chi Minh City starting Monday this week.

Elsewhere, stocks in Taiwan took a beating in May as rising cases of domestic infections prompted tighter restrictions.

The Taiex in Taiwan was Asia-Pacific's worst performing market in May, and fell 2.84% for the month.

Taiwan was once hailed internationally for its initial response to the pandemic, which enabled life in Taiwan to remain largely undisturbed compared to elsewhere. However, a recent spike in infections has resulted in measures such as mandatory mask-wearing and limits on indoor and outdoor gatherings.

Total infections in both Vietnam and Taiwan remain comparatively low globally. Vietnam has reported more than 7,300 cases while Taiwan has seen at least 8,511 infections, according to Hopkins data.
