Medical tests performed on U.S. Senator John McCain show he has a glioblastoma, an aggressive kind of brain cancer, according to a statement from McCain's office on Wednesday.
McCain had a 5-centimeter (2-inch) blood clot removed from above his left eye at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix on Friday.
The surgery went well, the hospital said, and McCain was planning to recuperate this week in Arizona. His surgery prevented a potential vote on the Republican health care plan.
McCain, a Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, was elected to the Senate in 1986. He was the Republican Party presidential nominee in 2008, losing to Barack Obama.
