Jack's marches into Chattanooga market - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Jack's Family Restaurants is continuing its march into the Chattanooga market with a new eatery slated to open in Red Bank before Thanksgiving.

Demolition on a former Rite Aid pharmacy at Dayton Boulevard and Ashland Terrace already has begun with plans for the restaurant submitted and reviewed by the city, said Red Bank City Manager Tim Thornbury.

"We're glad to see it," he said. "It's better than a vacant building or another parking lot. I think they'll do fine. That's a good location."

The new eatery marks another step in the Birmingham-based fast food chain's plan for eight to 10 locations in the Chattanooga area within the next year or so. The Red Bank unit will be the group's seventh in the market.

Earlier this summer, Jack's opened its newest restaurant on Hixson Pike near Cassandra Smith Road.

Jack's offers burgers, chicken, biscuits and shakes, and it has more than 170 locations in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Nathan Hoffman, a project manager for Venture Construction in Atlanta, said the Red Bank Jack's will look like the one recently opened on Hixson Pike.

He said that as soon as demolition is finished on the long-vacant Rite Aid, the company will move into putting up the 3,700-square-foot restaurant and drive-through.

Opening is expected in late October or early November, Hoffman said.

A Red Bank building permit put the construction cost at $583,000, though that doesn't include land or equipment.

Tamera Tolbert, who manages the Hixson Pike location, said that Jack's employs about 60 workers.

Tolbert said Jack's now has restaurants in Hixson, East Ridge, and Lookout Valley, along with Fort Oglethorpe, Chickamauga and Dalton in Northwest Georgia.

A Jack's official said in 2018 that the chain which started in 1960 wants to have eight to 10 units in the Chattanooga area within the next two to three years.

On Hixson Pike, Chattanooga developer Clint Wolford said that Jack's eatery is part of a six-acre tract where more development is planned. Wolford is developing the property with Chattanooga Lookouts co-owner John Woods.

In East Ridge, the company's store at 4209 Ringgold Road was aided by an incentive of up to $600,000 over 20 years awarded by that city based on the sales and property taxes the restaurant expects to generate.

The Jack's restaurant is located within the area covered by the Border Region District Retail Tourism Act, which is designed to encourage commercial development on the Tennessee side of towns bordering a state line. Within the district, there are special rules which apply to sales taxes collected from businesses operating there that allow a certain portion to be returned and used for development.

In Red Bank, a Marco's Pizza also is under construction on Dayton Boulevard and slated to open late this summer as the owner looks to tap into downtown Chattanooga and the area just north of the Tennessee River.

Zach Sanders, a Marco's franchisee who already owns a location in Ooltewah, said he wanted to go after the dine-in, carry-out, delivery and catering business in and near downtown.

"They're putting in a lot of new condos and apartments," he said. "It's the next great location to service that side of Chattanooga and the river."
