Unicoi and Erwin farmers markets set to kick off season - Johnson City Press (subscription)

The early June start for the Unicoi Farmers Market and Community Yard in Unicoi was postponed due to an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Scott’s Strawberry and Tomato Farm; the town sponsored market and sale is now set to get underway on July 7.

A press release announcing the opening states the market and sale will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the new Buffalo Pavillion at the Unicoi Tourist Information and Visitors Center at exit 32 of Interstate 26 “as long as coronavirus cases remain at a minimal level.”

According to the press release, “New COVID-19 regulations will be in place to protect the public.” The precautionary measures include “required masks, hand-sanitizer at entrance, one-way traffic, disposable food-gloves for testing ripeness of produce, additional space between vendors and customers and a request for exact or small change.”

Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch said, “We’re glad we can finally open the market safely. But we will continue to monitor the COVID crisis and adjust our plans as needed throughout the season.”

The Unicoi market will feature fresh fruits, vegetables, and baked goods, local craft vendors, and yard sale bargains.

Picnic tables available outside the visitors center will be spaced more than 6 feet apart to allow shoppers to have lunch with a view of the nearby Buffalo and Unaka mountain ridges.

The vendor fee for farm products, prepared food and handmade crafts is $5 for the entire season. Yard sale booths and demonstration spaces are free, but applications are required. Vendor applications are available online at unicoitn.net. For more information about the Unicoi market email [email protected] or contact Patricia Bennett at 423-735-0517.

The season opener for the evening farmers market held weekly in downtown Erwin will take place from 5 to 8 pm. Tuesday in the courthouse parking area at the corner of Main Avenue and Tucker Street.

Town Communications Specialist Jamie Rice said this year’s market has been rebranded as the Erwin Community Market to better reflect its inclusion of more handmade craft vendors, “kind of like a pop-up market on the streets with produce, too.”

In addition to fresh, locally grown produce, baked goods and crafts the market will include a featured food truck. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program credits (food stamps) will be accepted and doubled in value through federal grant funding to the market.

The market will also feature a Nourish Kids program with produce-related crafts and engagement activities for children, and every child who participates will receive $5 to spend on produce.

For greater social distancing, vendor booths will be spread farther apart across the parking lot and at the Gathering Place park directly across Main Avenue and along some adjoining sidewalks.

Hand washing stations will be located throughout the market and the use of face masks will be encouraged.
