This segment of What’s Ahead examines a stunning paradox: Our big tech giants are virtuosos of ingenuity, creating and supplying products and services that were once unimaginable and that have been enabling us to survive the COVID lockdowns and working from home, yet they face mortal political threats. Last week’s (virtual) congressional hearing with the CEOs of the Big Four saw their leaders attacked from all sides. These companies have habitually made avoidable and obtuse errors in a number of areas, such as personal privacy. The worst was blatantly discriminating against libertarian and right-of-center individuals, groups and websites, thereby foolishly alienating forces that otherwise would have been their natural political allies. These companies must take a cue from the pre-1982 legal monopoly AT&T, which was a paragon of excellence and responsiveness to public concerns.
