Derek Peralta said he is a registered democrat. Dominick DiCarlo is a registered republican and the Vice President of the Siena College Republican Club. Despite their different political views, after meeting freshmen year, they hit it off.
“Meeting Dom at first I was like okay he's just another typical Republican, but after I got to know him more I realized he was a real person and actually had feelings,” said Peralta.
Peralta said for him that is the key to surviving this election season. With the divide this presidential election has brought, he said it’s important to realize everyone has different life experiences. The two said while they have different solutions on how to solve heath care problems, what immigration policies should be in place and how the Supreme Court should like, they can talk about it.
“I think we both agree fundamentally that we all want everybody's lives to be better, that's why we believe in the policies that we do, we just think different solutions will produce that result,” said DiCarlo.
The two college juniors are now back home to finish the semester. Both said it is important to get out and vote Tuesday.
“I do not care if you're a republican, democrat an independent,” said DiCarlo. “The only way that anything changes in this country is if you exercise that right to vote.”
Peralta said it is especially important for college students to vote.
“We're such a powerful block and we act like we're not and we just keep staying at home like our voices don't matter, but yes they do,” said Peralta.
