“It’s the economy, stupid.”
That quip from James Carville helped Bill Clinton win the presidential election in 1992, and has been remembered for its simplicity and effectiveness. Now, with another election still being decided as of this writing, “it’s the economy” is appropriate again—not because it propelled either candidate to victory, but because a recovering economy will make sure the stock market keeps winning regardless of the outcome.
