2020 In Review: Massachusetts Politics - wgbh.org

Massachusetts politics were thrust into the national spotlight this year thanks to two key candidacies — Senator Elizabeth Warren’s run in the Democratic presidential primary, which she ended in March, and Congressman Joe Kennedy III’s ultimately unsuccessful effort to unseat Senator Ed Markey. Governor Charlie Baker gained national attention as well for his pandemic response and his decision to speak out against President Donald Trump’s unproved claims of voter fraud, but has seen some of his historically high support within the state slip over the course of the year. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has been among those pressing Baker on key issues, including COVID restrictions and significant cuts to the MBTA, but may face a tough challenge of his own ahead. And although the legislature extended its session to get more accomplished, results have been mixed.

Bay State Banner Senior Editor Yawu Miller and Shannon Jenkins, a professor of political science at UMass Dartmouth and the interim associate dean of the university's College of Arts and Sciences, joined Adam Reilly to discuss.
