Here’s another mismatch in the U.S. housing market: A third of homebuyers want a brand-new home (41 percent of millennials prefer new), according to the National Association of Home Builders and yet, nine out of 10 residential properties sold have an older home.
The most recent Census data shows that 12.3 percent of homes in the U.S. were built before 1940, while only 4.6 percent were built in the past five years.
Researchers at Filterbuy, an Alabama company that makes and sells replacement air filters directly to consumers, analyzed more than 300 cities across the country and ranked them according to the share of homes built before WWII. Portland ranked 14th.
