Latrobe Farmers Market opens for a new season Tuesday, with some new vendors on board and plans ahead for special activities.
The market will be open — rain or shine — from noon until 4 p.m., through Oct. 12 near the wooden playground at Legion Keener Park.
It’s open to vendors selling their own produce or homemade food or wares.
“They have to make it, grow it or bake it,” said Craig Shevchik, executive director of Latrobe-GLSD Parks and Recreation.
The local recreation board, which organizes the market, is expanding to include Unity Township, along with existing members the City of Latrobe, Youngstown and Greater Latrobe School District.
New to the market this year are Valkyrie Doughnuts, from Sewickley, and two Latrobe vendors: Silver Rain jewelry and Murray’s Collars, which offers handmade dog collars.
Special events planned
Shevchik plans to include special events at the market. First up will be a June 8 children’s storytime, provided by Adams Memorial Library and WQED as part of a week of Mister Rogers Family Days activities, June 7-12 in Latrobe.
Space is limited, so registration is required for either 12:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. Visit the Latrobe Art Center website, at latrobeartcenter.org, and click on Special Events under the “Programs and Events” heading.
Continuing a popular program, thanks to sponsorship from the local Dairy Queen, the Latrobe Farmers Market will offer regular drawings for $5 in market dollars that can be spent with market vendors. Visit the booth of market manager Jim Mikula to enter.
