Lake Charles College Prep’s TreVonte Citizen, a consensus top ten running back recruit in the country, announced Sunday he is decommitting from LSU and reopening the recruitment process.
“I would like to thank all the LSU coaching staff, commits and fans for taking the time to recruit me and show me love!,” Citizen posted to Twitter.
“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in my commitment to LSU. Thank you to the entire LSU coaching staff for providing me with an opportunity. With that being said, I will be decommitting from LSU. My recruitment is 100% open! Thank you LSU for all the love.”
Citizen, a four-star recruit ranked as the second best running back and 50th overall recruit in the nation by Rivals.com, committed to LSU in July.
At the time, LSU had commitments from each of the top four recruits in the state — Citizen, Ponchatoula safety Jacoby Mathews, St. Thomas More quarterback Walker Howard and Neville offensive lineman Mathews, who decommitted before the season started.
Citizen cited a strong relationship with LSU assistant coach Kevin Faulk, a former Tiger star running back, as a big part in his decision to commit to the Tigers. Faulk’s status at the school is in limbo after head coach Ed Orgeron was fired in October.
Citizen also considered Texas A&M, Auburn, Georgia and Arkansas before committing to the home state Tigers.
After splitting playing time between linebacker and running back his first three seasons at LCCP, Citizen assumed the primary running back role this year. He ran for 726 yards and 11 touchdowns on 66 carries before suffering a season-ending injury in Week 6. He ran for more than 120 yards in each of the first four games.
He has been selected to play in the 2022 All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
