The New Yorker Relaunches Its Political Scene Podcast

The midterms may be over, but a House leadership contest is already under way, and Donald Trump has announced another run for the Presidency. In a period of deepening division and growing threats to American democracy, The New Yorker has expanded and reimagined its flagship politics podcast, The Political Scene, which will now bring listeners three installments each week. Featuring new programming and hosts, the show offers analysis and insight from the magazine’s writers and editors into some of the most pressing issues of our time—from election subversion and abortion rights to the war in Ukraine.

On Wednesdays, Tyler Foggatt, a senior editor at the magazine, will interview New Yorker staff writers and outside experts about the most consequential political story of the week, examining the polarizing issues and political forces shaping our world today. In recent episodes, Foggatt has spoken with Eric Lach, a staff writer at the magazine, about how deep-blue New York State became a weak link for the Democrats, and with the contributing writer Jeannie Suk Gersen, a professor at Harvard Law School, about the Supreme Court’s looming decision on the fate of affirmative action.

On Fridays, join the staff writers Susan B. Glasser, Jane Mayer, and Evan Osnos for a new weekly roundtable discussion, as they bring their expertise to bear on the country’s major political stories. Acclaimed reporters, they’ll give listeners the ultimate insider’s perspective on what’s happening in Washington, D.C., keeping us informed about the state of American democracy. Since June, the trio have provided analysis of the House select committee’s investigation into the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, helping listeners make sense of the historic hearings.

The podcast will continue to feature a weekly segment drawn from The New Yorker Radio Hour, the national radio program and podcast hosted by the magazine’s editor, David Remnick, and co-produced by The New Yorker and WNYC Studios. Recent installments, released on Mondays, have featured an interview with Miami’s Republican mayor, Francis Suarez, who is seen as a potential future Presidential candidate, and a discussion with the staff writer Stephania Taladrid about an underground network distributing abortion medication to women in states where the procedure is banned.

The New Yorker, one of the first podcasters in publishing, débuted its politics podcast in late 2007, with Dorothy Wickenden, the magazine’s executive editor until this past spring, as its host. Since then, the magazine has added programs that include The Fiction Podcast, The Poetry Podcast, and The Writer’s Voice.
