Today, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) sought to downplay a potential criminal case related to a 2016 hush-money payment by Donald Trump, saying it involved “personal money” and shouldn’t be prosecuted under the statute of limitations. He made the comments at a retreat in Orlando, where House Republicans have been peppered with questions about a potential indictment of Trump, which could come in New York as early as this week. Trump would be the first former U.S. president to be indicted.

In Washington, President Biden’s schedule includes a White House conference on land preservation and the presentation of awards for the arts and humanities. Recipients include Bruce Springsteen, Gladys Knight and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
